IMBEL Producing Type 99

27 January 2000
IMBEL Producing Type 99.
In an unexpected move, the rejuvenated IMBEL Corporation of Brazil, has decided to begin mass production on the Type 99 tank, under license from the Chinese government.  The main battle tank, weighing in at 60 tons, and powered by a 600 horsepower, multi-fuel, eight cylinder engine, is recognized as being both modular, capable and affordable on the battlefield.  Recent advances in combat electronics have made this tank quite effective in test information provided by the Chinese People’s Liberation Army.
Brazil becomes the second Latin American country, after Argentina, to begin building this type of tank, fueling speculation of a new arms race in Latin America.

They are planning on an initial run of 2,000 units, with capacity for export.
